Is a Premium Cordless Vacuum Worth the Money?

Only for the extras. Paying more buys a vacuum that thinks for itself, but not longer runtime on full power or a lighter one.

8 models · 4,833 verified-buyer ratings · 16 expert reviews · Updated 4 November 2026

Key findings

  1. Premium models that set their own suction. Among affordable ones, only the Dreame R20 does.

  2. The longest any model lasted on full power when timed. Most stopped sooner.

  3. Median weight of the affordable models. Premium and top-of-range ones: 3.5 kg.

  4. Premium buyers who gave 1–3 stars. For affordable models it was about 1 in 7.

  5. Verified V16 Piston Animal buyers who gave 1–3 stars. For the Gen5detect it was 4%.

  6. Models that empty themselves into a dock: only Shark's PowerDetect Clean & Empty.

What the extra money buys

Unhappy buyers: share of 1–3 star ratings

Unhappy buyers rise a little as the price falls, but one premium Dyson, the V16, sits far above the rest.

So, should you pay more?

Pay more if…

  • You want the vacuum to set its own suction
  • You'd like a dock that empties the bin for you
  • You want to see fine dust before you vacuum it

Save your money if…

  • Most of your cleaning is on Eco or normal power
  • You'd rather carry 2.8 kg than 3.5 kg
  • You don't need a screen telling you what it picked up

How we did it

Which models, where each number comes from, and what the data can't tell you.
  • Models: eight cordless stick vacuums that UK reviewers rate and UK shops sell, from affordable to top of the range.
  • Price levels: from prices we checked at UK shops (Atlantic Electrics, John Lewis, RGB Direct and Levoit's own shop) on 4 November 2026. We show the level, never the price.
  • Claims: each maker's longest runtime, always on the lowest power.
  • Timed runtimes: by UK testers Expert Reviews and TechRadar. The table names whose stopwatch it was.
  • Weight: as a stick, with the wand and floor head on.
  • Buyer ratings: verified buyers only, at shops that check the purchase (Currys, Otto, Costco, Best Buy Canada and others). Never Amazon. We count 1–3 stars as unhappy.

Limits

  • Each timing comes from one review. Floors, dirt and battery age all change real runtime.
  • Buyer ratings pool several countries. The V16 and PowerDetect counts come from Best Buy Canada.
  • Top of the range has one model, the Gen5detect, so it shows a model, not a trend. It was out of stock at the shop we checked.
  • We don't score cleaning here. Reviewers test it in different ways, so it stays in each model's sources.

Questions people ask

Is the Dyson Gen5detect worth it over a V12 Detect Slim?

On our numbers, mostly no. The V12 is lighter (2.4 kg against 3.5 kg) and lasted longer on full power in TechRadar's test (20 minutes against 8). The Gen5detect lasted longer on its lowest setting (62 minutes against 46). Both had about 1 in 20 unhappy buyers.

Do cheaper cordless vacuums run flat sooner?

Not in our data. The affordable Dreame R20 timed 84 minutes on its lowest setting, longer than any Dyson here. On full power, both Levoits outlasted the Gen5detect.

Which cordless vacuums empty themselves?

Of the eight we compared, only the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty. It docks into a base that pulls the dust out of its bin.

What do unhappy V16 Piston Animal owners complain about?

In the 1–3 star reviews we read, owners most often said it picked up less than their older Dyson, disliked the new floor head, and found it heavy. A few reported faults in the first weeks.
