The XM6 is the closest all-round match, and What Hi-Fi rated its sound more detailed and cohesive than the Max 2's. Its noise canceling goes quieter on trains and engines, and it folds into a hard case. You lose Apple's instant switching and spatial audio, and some find the clamp firm.
Battery is where the Max 2 is weakest and the Momentum 4 strongest: SoundGuys measured about 56 hours with noise canceling on. Expert Reviews liked its spacious, musical sound. It blocks less low rumble than the best, its calls suffer in noise, and the touch panel reacts to stray brushes.
If comfort and quiet on the commute are what you're after, the Space 2 does both for a fraction of the Max 2's price. Reviewers split on the sound: warm and full to Tom's Guide, flat to What Hi-Fi. Expert Reviews called it very comfortable and strong on rumble, but weak on voices.
Final recommendation: If you use Android, or care more about battery than build, skip the Max 2. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the closest swap and quieter on planes. The Sennheiser Momentum 4 lasts for days and costs under half. The Soundcore Space 2 is the comfortable budget pick. Stay with the AirPods Max 2 if you're all-in on Apple and want its build and spatial audio.

It's the weak spot. Apple rates it at 20 hours with noise canceling, while Sony and Bose claim 30 and Sennheiser 60. What Hi-Fi called it the major disappointment, and since there's no off switch, it drains unless you store it in the Smart Case.
Yes, as standard Bluetooth headphones over AAC. Reviewers found pairing easy, but Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, automatic switching and most settings need an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Yes, at 386 g they weigh far more than the Sony XM6 or Bose. T3 found the mesh headband spreads the weight well, while What Hi-Fi felt the metal cups press on the ears over a long session.
